The true story behind The Girl in The Picture on Netflix

Netflix has grown a reputation for finding out unusual and fascinating true crime stories and “The Girl in the Picture” is one of the rare and intriguing real crime stories. This true story follows the mysterious case of Suzanne Marie Sevakis, who used the name Sharon Marshall, who was found dying by the side of a road in 1990. Suzanne’s photo as a young girl with her father was of particular interest to the documentary maker who delved into the tragic story of what happened to her. Suzanne lived-in a home with her father, Franklin Floyd, who was a known fugitive with worrying behaviour.

Suzanne Chipman was one of Sandi Chipman’s four children when she was born on September 9, 1969. The Girl in The Picture reveals the horrifying truth about Suzanne, She was abducted as a child by her stepfather Franklin Delano Floyd.

He pretended to raise her as his child after her mother was imprisoned, and then once she became an adult, he married her. Franklin’s lies and deception finally come into the picture when an FBI agent investigates a suspicious life insurance claim.

That the film has the blessing and input of Suzanne’s family, speaks volumes about the compassion behind Borgman’s filmmaking – far too many true crime documentaries go ahead with their stories without even thinking about how it would affect those close to the crime. As we watch her gravestone unveiled with her real name for the first time, Girl in the Picture becomes a tribute to Suzanne, the kind, bright, loving person everyone remembers.
